Is cream of mushroom soup healthy? Portion, sodium and recipe matter

Cream of mushroom soup can fit into a meal, but mushrooms alone do not determine its nutritional profile. A condensed product may provide substantial sodium and relatively little protein or fiber. Compare the recipe and the amount actually eaten.

Read condensed and prepared portions correctly

The inspected US Campbell regular condensed soup lists 100 calories, 860 mg sodium, 2 g protein and 0 g fiber per half-cup of concentrate. It contains about 2.5 servings per can. These figures describe that product before preparation, not every homemade or packaged mushroom soup. [1]

Diluting does not remove the sodium already present

Adding water changes concentration and volume. If all the original concentrate is eaten, its sodium remains. Using the approximate label serving count, a whole can supplies about 2,150 mg sodium before other ingredients; this is 860 multiplied by 2.5, not an independently measured value. [1][2]

Consider the whole meal and dietary needs

Compare lower-sodium options using equal prepared portions, and include whatever milk, toppings or casserole ingredients you add. The inspected soup is not a substantial protein or fiber source by itself. A meal can include other foods that provide those nutrients instead of relying on the mushroom name. [2][1]

Creamy does not answer allergy or gluten questions

This regular US formulation declares wheat, milk and soy. It is not interchangeable with a gluten-free or dairy-free recipe. Exact ingredients and finished-product labeling matter more than a shared soup name. [1]

Divide a recipe by the portions actually served

Imagine one can goes into a dish split equally among five people. The soup contributes about 430 mg sodium per person before other ingredients, using the approximate can total. Eating the entire can yourself would be a different exposure, even after adding water. [1][2]
