Can you take too much lysine? Safety studies are not overdose cutoffs

Lysine is an essential amino acid, but that does not make an unlimited supplemental amount safe. After an excess or uncertain ingestion, assess the actual product and exposure rather than comparing it with a supposed universally safe gram limit.

Study tolerance does not guarantee individual safety

A 2020 systematic review abstract described mainly gastrointestinal adverse events across clinical studies. Its pooled gastrointestinal-risk result was not statistically significant. That is different from proving that no person can experience harm or that every formulation and medical condition was adequately studied. [1]

A provisional NOAEL is not a personal dose

The review proposed a provisional no-observed-adverse-effect level for healthy subjects using gastrointestinal outcomes. Such a research estimate is not a poisoning threshold, a target to reach or a guarantee for children or people with illness. Only the review abstract was inspected here; the individual trials were not independently appraised. [1]

Count the full product

Record the lysine amount per tablet or serving, the number taken, timing and any other ingredients. Grams and milligrams differ by a factor of 1,000. A combination product can create a different exposure from lysine alone, so keep the container available. [2]

Get case-specific advice when needed

For an excess, concerning symptoms or an uncertain ingestion, contact a poison center. In the U.S., Poison Control is available at 1-800-222-1222. Call emergency services for collapse, seizure, breathing difficulty or inability to awaken. Do not induce vomiting or take another dose to test tolerance. [3]

Do not use arithmetic as a safety clearance

Imagine several tablets were taken from a bottle whose serving is two tablets. Calculate the actual amount for the adviser, but do not conclude it is harmless merely because it is below a number found in a review. The person, symptoms and complete formulation remain relevant. [2][3]
