Can mushrooms cause headaches?

Headache is a recognized adverse effect of psilocybin, including after the main psychedelic experience. That differs from evidence about an ordinary edible-mushroom meal. A sudden, extremely painful headache or one with weakness, confusion or a seizure requires emergency assessment.

Psilocybin can cause headache despite headache-treatment research

NCCIH lists headache among adverse effects. Research investigating selected headache disorders does not mean psilocybin prevents every headache or cannot cause one. The indication, study design and outcome matter. [1]

A headache after dinner has several possible explanations

Stress, dehydration, missed meals, alcohol and other conditions can cause headache. Timing after a mushroom dish does not isolate the mushroom as the cause. Record the whole meal, medicines and symptoms if headaches recur. [2]

Do not assume a severe headache is an expected comedown

Seek emergency help for abrupt extreme pain, a seizure, weakness, difficulty speaking, marked confusion or fever with a stiff neck. A suspected unknown-mushroom exposure also warrants poison-control advice. [2][3]

Separate a study question from personal treatment

Imagine someone develops a headache after psychedelic use and takes more because they read about cluster-headache research. That reasoning confuses a potential research application with an adverse reaction. Avoid further exposure and get appropriate clinical advice. [1]
