What vitamin or mineral deficiency causes shaky hands?

Shaky hands do not identify one vitamin or mineral deficiency. Nutritional and electrolyte problems can affect nerves and muscles, but tremor also has common non-nutritional causes. The useful next step is to characterize the shaking and investigate its cause rather than choose a supplement by symptom alone.

Mineral problems can affect muscle and nerve activity

NIH describes neuromuscular symptoms with worsening magnesium deficiency, including contractions and cramps. These findings are not identical to every hand tremor. A clinician may consider electrolyte problems in the appropriate context, but shaking alone cannot prove a magnesium deficiency. [1]

Vitamin-related nerve symptoms are not a specific tremor test

Vitamin B12 deficiency can produce neurological symptoms, including numbness and tingling, and may need treatment even when anemia is absent. That does not make B12 the universal explanation for shaky hands. The pattern and associated findings determine which tests are useful. [2]

Many causes are unrelated to a missing nutrient

NHS notes that stress, tiredness, caffeine and some medicines can make shaking more noticeable. Essential tremor and other medical causes need their own assessment. Mayo describes evaluation for thyroid, metabolic and medication-related explanations when investigating essential tremor. [3][4]

Describe the pattern before buying a treatment

Record whether the shaking occurs at rest or with movement, affects one or both hands, changes with caffeine or interferes with daily tasks. Seek assessment if it worsens or affects activities. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice or assume that a normal diet excludes all medical causes. [3][4]

A practical comparison

Imagine shaking follows several caffeinated drinks but persists on other days. Caffeine may be a contributor, yet the continuing pattern still deserves review. Correct a confirmed deficiency if present; do not treat a temporary improvement after a supplement as proof of the original cause. [3][4]
