Supplements that can cause diarrhea: review the dose and whole formula

Magnesium supplements, some botanicals and sugar alcohols in a product can contribute to diarrhea. The cause may be the active ingredient, dose or added ingredients, but a new symptom should not automatically be blamed on supplements when infection or another illness is possible.

Magnesium can have an osmotic effect

ODS explains that higher supplemental magnesium intake can cause diarrhea because unabsorbed salts draw water into the gut. Count magnesium from separate supplements, antacids and laxatives together. Changing the product name without reviewing the amount may leave the same problem. [1]

Botanicals can also upset the digestive tract

NCCIH lists diarrhea, stomach upset and vomiting among possible ashwagandha adverse effects. An herb marketed for relaxation can still affect bowel symptoms. A combination product makes it harder to identify which ingredient is responsible. [2][3]

Check sweeteners and the prepared drink

NIDDK identifies sugar alcohols among dietary items that can worsen diarrhea. Look at chewables, gummies, powders and the liquid mixed with them. A sugar-free label does not establish that a product will be easier on the digestive tract. [4]

Avoid stacking products while symptoms continue

Record when the product started, the serving amount and when symptoms appeared. Review nonessential products with a pharmacist or clinician rather than adding several remedies at once. Do not independently stop prescribed replacement therapy without advice about an alternative. [3]

Use warning symptoms to change the plan

Imagine loose stools follow a new powder but are accompanied by fever, blood or dehydration. The timing does not establish a harmless supplement side effect. Seek medical advice for those signs or persistent symptoms instead of repeatedly changing the dose. [5]
