Supplements that make you tired: distinguish sedation from unexplained fatigue

Melatonin and some herbal products can cause drowsiness. The response depends on the dose, timing and other medicines; new or persistent fatigue should not automatically be treated with an energy supplement.

Melatonin may affect the following day

NCCIH notes that melatonin can cause daytime drowsiness, particularly when it remains active longer. Supplement contents may also differ from label amounts. A larger dose is not automatically a better sleep plan. [1]

Herbal products can add sedating effects

NCCIH lists drowsiness among possible ashwagandha effects and cautions about interactions with sedatives and other medicines. A multi-ingredient sleep or stress blend may therefore have effects beyond its best-known ingredient. [2]

Drowsiness and fatigue are not identical

Feeling sleepy after a product is different from persistent loss of energy with other symptoms. Review the timing, all products and medical context. Do not assume that another supplement will correct the cause. [3]

Protect activities that require alertness

If a product makes you drowsy, avoid driving or hazardous tasks while impaired and seek advice about the regimen. Review combined sleep products and medicines instead of independently changing prescribed treatment. Serious or unusual symptoms after a supplement need medical assessment. [1][2][4]

Use the timeline to simplify the review

Imagine morning drowsiness starts after adding both melatonin and a stress blend. Bring both labels and their timing to a pharmacist or clinician. Taking a stimulant the next morning can obscure the problem without establishing a safer sleep plan. [1][2][3]
