A mineral mixture can hide the relevant ingredient
Products marketed as multivitamins, sleep powders or digestive remedies may contain minerals. List each ingredient and amount, including antacids and laxatives. The front-of-pack purpose does not determine whether an antibiotic interaction is possible. [1]
Ciprofloxacin has a directional interval
MedlinePlus instructs that the listed mineral-containing antacids or multivitamins be taken at least six hours before or two hours after ciprofloxacin. Equivalently, ciprofloxacin comes at least two hours before or six hours after those products. Reversing the order changes the required gap. [2]
Do not copy that rule to another prescription
Cefdinir instructions separate iron and magnesium/aluminum antacids by two hours on either side. Doxycycline instructions give iron preparations a different interval: iron three hours before or two hours after doxycycline. These examples show why a universal two-hour rule is inadequate. [3][4]
Spacing does not resolve every interaction
A timing adjustment is useful only when it addresses the actual interaction. Do not assume an herbal blend is cleared merely because it is taken at bedtime instead of breakfast. Give the pharmacist the complete formula and ask whether the product should be paused, separated or otherwise reviewed. [1]
Write both product names and the order
Imagine a person switches antibiotics but keeps an old supplement timetable. The previous interval may no longer apply. Recheck the new drug, formulation and supplement, then record which is taken first and the required time between them. [2][4]
| Antibiotic | Example requiring review |
|---|---|
| Ciprofloxacin | Listed mineral products: directional six/two-hour interval |
| Cefdinir | Iron and magnesium/aluminum antacids |
| Doxycycline | Iron has its own stated interval |
