Is Citracal useful? Match the calcium amount to the dietary gap

Citracal Maximum Plus supplies calcium citrate with vitamin D and other minerals. It can contribute to calcium intake, but the amount needed depends on food intake and the clinician’s plan, not the brand name alone.

Read the two-caplet serving correctly

The inspected Maximum Plus page lists 650 mg calcium and 25 micrograms, or 1,000 IU, of vitamin D3 per two caplets. It also lists zinc, copper and manganese. These are serving amounts; one caplet is not the full listed serving. Other Citracal products can differ. [1]

Citrate can be convenient when stomach acid is low

NIH explains that calcium citrate depends less on stomach acid than calcium carbonate and can be taken without food. That practical distinction does not establish that everyone needs a citrate supplement or that taking more calcium is better. [2]

Count food and other supplements first

Calcium intake includes food, fortified drinks and other supplements. Maximum Plus directions describe two caplets twice daily, which would supply 1,300 mg supplemental calcium before food. Do not assume that full label schedule is necessary to close your individual dietary gap; review the plan with a clinician or dietitian. [2][1]

Avoid accidental duplication

Imagine a person already takes a calcium-containing multivitamin and regularly eats calcium-rich foods. Add those amounts before choosing a Citracal serving, and include its vitamin D in the total. Review medicines for spacing requirements rather than swallowing everything together automatically. [2][3]
