The thiamin connection is a specific disease mechanism

ODS describes beriberi from thiamin deficiency, with nerve and muscle problems and, in rare cases, heart failure leading to lower-limb edema. This is not a general explanation for every swollen ankle and is not established by swelling alone. [1]

Swelling has many other explanations

MedlinePlus lists kidney, heart, liver and thyroid disease, pregnancy, medicines, excess sodium and poor nutrition among causes. Low blood albumin can also contribute; albumin is a protein, not a vitamin. The location, onset and accompanying symptoms help direct investigation. [2]

Do not use a vitamin as an unexplained-swelling test

Imagine new leg swelling is treated with a B-complex supplement without assessment. Even if diet is limited, the swelling still needs evaluation. Contact a clinician for unexplained swelling, especially when breathing is affected; follow cause-specific advice about fluids and medicines rather than inventing a diuretic or vitamin regimen. [2]
