When should you take GABA and L-theanine for sleep?

No optimal combination timing has been established. A small exploratory human study used both supplements 30 minutes before bedtime for four weeks, but had no placebo group. That schedule is a research protocol, not proof of the best time, necessary dose or guaranteed sleep benefit.

The study used a defined bedtime schedule

Nineteen participants were included in the main analysis of a single-arm study using 700 mg GABA and 200 mg L-theanine once daily, 30 minutes before bed. Sleep questionnaire scores improved over four weeks. Without a comparison group, expectation, time and other changes cannot be separated from a supplement effect. [1]

It did not compare different times or individual ingredients

The study cannot establish whether 30 minutes is better than another interval, whether both ingredients are needed, or whether lower amounts work similarly. It was funded by Nestlé Health Science, and the authors disclosed related employment or financial relationships. [1]

Broader theanine research does not validate every blend

Reviews identify promising sleep findings but unresolved dose, timing and duration questions. A product containing additional melatonin, herbs or caffeine is a different intervention and needs its own assessment. [2]

Review sedation and persistent sleep problems

Imagine someone already takes zolpidem and wants to add the combination. MSK advises reviewing theanine with sedating medicines because drowsiness may increase. Discuss the full regimen and the underlying sleep problem rather than copying a study schedule. [3][4]
