B12 is a recognized nutritional cause

ODS lists glossitis among manifestations of B12 deficiency, alongside anemia and possible neurological symptoms. Deficiency can arise from poor absorption as well as inadequate intake. A sore tongue therefore does not determine either the nutrient status or the reason for a deficiency. [1]

The local differential is wider

MedlinePlus describes causes including infection, injury, dry mouth, reactions to oral-care products and irritants. Examination, history and sometimes blood testing help distinguish them. Nutritional treatment is appropriate when a nutritional problem is identified, while an infection or local injury requires its own care. [2]

Swelling can change the urgency

Arrange review for persistent symptoms or difficulties with speaking, chewing or swallowing. Get emergency help if tongue swelling interferes with breathing. Imagine a smooth, sore tongue leads to self-treatment with B vitamins: that should not delay assessment of significant swelling or an unresolved cause. [2]
