Is hemp low FODMAP? Seeds, milk and protein powder need separate checks

Hemp is not one interchangeable food. Hulled seeds can fit a portioned low-FODMAP recipe, while milk and protein powders require assessment of their processing, ingredients and serving. Do not apply a seed serving limit to a scoop of powder or a glass of milk.

Seeds can fit a low-FODMAP eating pattern

Monash publishes a low-FODMAP recipe containing hulled hemp seeds. That establishes that hemp seeds are not automatically excluded; it does not establish an unlimited portion or a universal threshold for every seed preparation. Use current serving guidance for the food you have. [1][2]

Hemp milk is a separate formulation

Plant milks are diluted and processed, and their carbohydrate profile can differ from the starting seed. Check the precise product and tested portion. If used instead of dairy, also examine calcium and B12 fortification rather than judging the milk only by FODMAP status. [3]

Protein powder requires product-specific evidence

Monash cautions that protein-powder FODMAP content cannot reliably be predicted without testing. Hemp powder may have residual carbohydrate or added ingredients. A protein percentage or a natural label does not certify a finished serving. [4]

Added fibre can matter more than the hemp name

Check for inulin, chicory fibre and relevant polyol sweeteners. Their presence changes the assessment of a beverage or shake. Tolerance to plain seeds does not demonstrate tolerance to a flavoured blend. [4][3]

Compare like with like

Imagine a person tolerates a small portion of hulled seeds but develops symptoms after a hemp shake containing added inulin. The response cannot be assigned to all hemp foods. Record the full recipe, portion and other meal ingredients when discussing it with a dietitian. [4]
