Is icosapent ethyl fish oil? It is a prescription EPA medicine

A prescription indication is more specific than an omega-3 claim

MedlinePlus describes use to lower triglycerides and to reduce certain cardiovascular risks in selected adults. That does not mean every person taking fish oil meets the same criteria or receives the same benefit. Discuss the reason for the prescription with the treating clinician. [1]

EPA and DHA amounts are not interchangeable labels

Retail products may supply mixtures of EPA and DHA in varying amounts. Icosapent ethyl is a specific EPA-related medicine. A bottle’s total fish-oil weight does not provide a valid capsule-for-capsule replacement calculation. [2]

Use the prescribed administration instructions

MedlinePlus instructs taking icosapent ethyl with food twice daily and swallowing capsules whole. Follow the individual prescription and do not add or substitute a retail omega-3 product without checking with the prescriber. [1]

Adverse effects and interactions need review

Tell the clinician about all medicines and supplements, including products that affect bleeding. Unusual bruising or bleeding, an abnormal heartbeat or signs of an allergic reaction require medical advice; severe symptoms require urgent care. [1]

Compare the actual active preparation

Imagine an over-the-counter bottle says 1,000 mg fish oil per capsule. That number alone does not establish its EPA amount, chemical form or equivalence to a prescription. Have the pharmacist review the exact label if cost or availability makes a change necessary. [2][1]
