Can melatonin be injected? Research routes and risks

Injected melatonin has been studied in controlled research, but that does not make an oral supplement suitable for injection or establish a routine insomnia treatment. Do not inject liquid melatonin, dissolve tablets for injection or substitute an experimental route for a prescribed formulation.

Research has examined nonoral delivery

A pharmacokinetic review included oral and intravenous studies, while a separate review examined routes including subcutaneous injection. These studies explored how melatonin enters and leaves the bloodstream. Pharmacokinetic investigation is not the same as establishing a routine clinical sleep treatment. [1][2]

Faster exposure does not prove better outcomes

The alternative-route review reported relatively rapid absorption after subcutaneous administration but did not document advantages over other routes. Differences in blood concentration cannot alone demonstrate better sleep, greater safety or an appropriate dose for home use. [2]

An oral product is not an injectable preparation

Oral supplements and research preparations are different formulations with different intended routes. A dropper bottle or crushed tablet cannot be assumed sterile or suitable for injection. The reviewed consumer guidance discusses oral use, not a validated method for converting a supplement into an injectable medicine. [3][4]

Address the reason oral treatment is unsuitable

Imagine swallowing difficulty prompts someone to consider injection. Ask a pharmacist about a suitable oral liquid or other professionally selected option. Route changes require an appropriate formulation and clinical rationale, not an attempt to force faster absorption. [4][2]
