Vitamin C in green and gold kiwifruit: use the named variety

USDA’s green and SunGold kiwifruit entries differ substantially. A variety-specific value is more informative than one number for every kiwi.

Two records with different concentrations

USDA SR Legacy 2018 reports 92.7 mg vitamin C per 100 g for raw green kiwifruit and 161.3 mg for raw ZESPRI SunGold. The latter is a named cultivar record, not a value that should be assigned to every gold kiwi. Both figures are reference food-composition estimates rather than a comparison of clinical outcomes. [1]

Per-fruit values also depend on size

The green record’s 69 g fruit gives about 64.0 mg vitamin C. SunGold’s listed 81 g fruit gives about 130.7 mg. The difference per piece reflects both composition and the different reference weights. Use edible weight and a matching variety when estimating your own portion. [1]

A hypothetical matched-weight comparison

For 75 g portions, the reference estimates are 69.5 mg for green and 121.0 mg for SunGold. Holding weight constant isolates the database concentration difference. It does not mean every piece will contain exactly that amount or establish that additional vitamin C always improves health. [1]
