Can magnesium cause dry eyes or help them? What to check

The inspected guidance does not establish magnesium as a standard dry-eye treatment or a common direct cause of dry eyes. Tear production, tear evaporation, eyelid conditions, environment and medicines are more established considerations. A new supplement and a new symptom occurring together do not prove causation.

Dry eyes have several common explanations

NHS guidance describes inadequate tears or rapid tear evaporation. Contact lenses, prolonged screen use, dry environments, some medicines and conditions such as blepharitis or Sjögrens syndrome can contribute. These possibilities should be considered before assuming a mineral deficiency. [1]

A magnesium role in normal physiology is not an eye treatment

Magnesium is essential, but the inspected nutrient and dry-eye guidance does not establish a magnesium dose or form for treating dry eyes. A general anti-inflammatory or muscle-relaxation explanation is not direct evidence of improved tear-film function. [2][1]

Review a suspected adverse effect carefully

If symptoms follow a supplement change, note the product, dose, other ingredients and concurrent changes. Discuss persistent symptoms and medicines with a clinician or pharmacist. Do not stop prescribed medicines independently, even when a medicine-related cause is suspected. [1][2]

Use eye-appropriate care and recognize urgency

Screen breaks, appropriate eyelid care and pharmacist-recommended eye products may help depending on the cause. Do not put magnesium body sprays into the eyes. A painful red eye, a red eye with contact lenses, or changes in vision need urgent assessment rather than a supplement experiment. [1][3]

Avoid attributing several changes to one capsule

Imagine someone starts magnesium while also changing contact lenses and spending longer at a screen. The symptom timeline does not isolate the supplement. An eye assessment and complete exposure history can guide a more useful response. [1]
