Melatonin and constipation: a reported effect is not a diagnosis

Constipation has been reported with melatonin, but its frequency and relevance depend on the evidence and preparation. New constipation still needs review of other medicines, diet and symptoms.

Read the qualification attached to the report

The Slenyto patient leaflet lists constipation with frequency unknown and specifies that it was reported with another pharmaceutical form and strength. That wording matters: it does not establish a common rate for Slenyto or for every retail melatonin gummy. It supports the possibility of an adverse effect, not certainty about an individual episode. [1]

Review timing and the whole medication list

Record when the bowel change began, the exact melatonin preparation and other changes in medicines or routine. NHS guidance emphasizes that melatonin can interact with other medicines and that clinicians should know the full list. A clinician or pharmacist can assess the pattern rather than assuming that one newly noticed ingredient is the only possible cause. [2][3]

Do not add another supplement to mask an unresolved problem

Imagine constipation starts after a new multi-ingredient sleep product. Adding a laxative supplement without checking the formula can complicate the picture. Seek assessment for persistent or severe symptoms, and contact the prescriber if the sleep treatment needs changing. The leaflet report does not provide a self-treatment dose. [1][3]
