The base determines the texture
Manufacturers use systems such as gelatin or pectin to form a chewable gel. Sweeteners, water, acids, flavors and colors vary by product. For example, the current Zarbee’s children’s gummy lists pectin, honey, sucrose and glucose syrup alongside melatonin; that is one formula, not a universal recipe. [1][2]
Mixing and depositing control the portion
Equipment-maker descriptions show ingredient weighing, controlled mixing and cooking, followed by depositing into molds and cooling. Processes differ: some starch-free systems deposit at final moisture without a separate drying stage. A fixed curing time cannot be assumed for all melatonin gummies. [3]
The active ingredient needs its own quality controls
A gummy’s appearance does not measure its hormone content. FDA’s manufacturing framework addresses production controls, and NCCIH describes variability in melatonin supplement content. Consistent texture and a correct-looking label are therefore different from verification of the finished dose. [4][5]
Read per-gummy and per-serving amounts
Imagine a label lists the amount for a two-gummy serving. Treating that as the amount in each gummy doubles the assumed dose. Check the actual serving basis, other active ingredients and storage directions; a candy-like form should still be stored securely away from children. [6][5]
