Is mold a mushroom? Two fungal growth forms

Molds and mushroom-forming organisms are fungi, but a mold colony is not simply a small mushroom.

The broader category is fungus

Mold and mushroom are not interchangeable names. Bread mold such as Rhizopus grows as a network of fine threads and produces spore-bearing structures. A familiar cap-and-stalk mushroom is a larger reproductive structure produced by a fungus. Both belong within the broader fungal world, but their visible growth is organized differently. [1]

A mushroom is not the whole organism

Much of a mushroom-forming fungus can exist as mycelium within its growing material. The conspicuous mushroom is associated with reproduction rather than being the entire persistent organism. Mold colonies also contain networks of fungal threads, so the presence of threads alone does not mean a colony will eventually produce a cap-and-stalk mushroom. [1]

Comparing two hypothetical observations

Suppose one observation shows bread covered by a spreading fuzzy colony and another shows a mushroom emerging from soil. Record each visible structure separately instead of calling both mushrooms. The comparison explains a growth form; it does not identify the species or establish whether either material is safe to eat. [1]
