Physical appearance is not enough

NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service explains that many hard capsules can be opened, while exceptions exist. Soft capsules usually contain liquid or paste and are generally unsuitable for opening. [1]

The guidance concerns checking individual preparations. It is not permission to open any product simply because its contents appear to be a familiar nutrient. [1]

Preserve the intended delivery and dose

Ask a pharmacist or consult the exact manufacturer instructions before opening a capsule. Modified-release or other specialized formulations may depend on intact components, and dispersing contents can introduce dose-handling problems. [1]

If swallowing is difficult, a suitable alternative formulation may be preferable. Confirm its concentration and instructions rather than assuming a liquid and a capsule have identical dosing. [1]

Two capsule products can require different handling

Imagine one preparation allows its contents to be sprinkled and another requires swallowing intact. Permission for the first does not transfer to the second.
