Different ingredients can serve different purposes

FDA describes flavors and sweeteners as separate ingredient categories. Other ingredients may help texture, mixing or stability without being the main protein source. [1]

Consequently, a short front-label description cannot identify every function in the formula. Read the ingredient list before treating unflavored as a complete composition statement. [1]

Use the attribute that actually matters to you

Someone avoiding a particular sweetener needs its ingredient identity, while someone comparing nutrient amounts needs the nutrition panel. These are related but different checks. [1]

An unsweetened preparation can still have the characteristic taste of its ingredients. This page does not rank sensory quality or assume that fewer ingredients automatically produces better health outcomes. [1]

Ask two separate questions

Imagine a powder has no added flavor but includes a sweetening ingredient. The lack of flavoring does not answer whether that sweetener is present.
