The study and its comparison
Twenty-three healthy volunteers completed a randomized crossover experiment comparing psilocybin after two weeks of escitalopram pretreatment with psilocybin after placebo pretreatment. [1]
Escitalopram did not materially alter positive subjective effects or psilocin pharmacokinetics. Some anxiety and adverse subjective or cardiovascular effects were reduced under the study conditions. [1]
What the finding establishes
Participants were healthy, pretreatment was brief and treatment blinding was not evaluated. Results do not cover every SSRI, chronic treatment or psychiatric illness. University Hospital Basel and Mind Medicine supported the work; licensing and consultancy were disclosed. Do not combine drugs or stop prescribed antidepressants on this basis. [1]
A hypothetical distinction
Imagine a short interaction study differs from years of treatment in a patient. The difference limits how its safety findings transfer.
