Is Radiesse a filler or a collagen biostimulator? The terms describe different aspects

Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler made with calcium hydroxylapatite particles in a gel carrier. The manufacturer also describes collagen and elastin stimulation as part of its action. It is not an injection of dietary collagen, and the biostimulator label does not remove the risks of a filler procedure.

The device contains a mineral-based material

The FDA-hosted instructions identify synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite in a water, glycerin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral also found in teeth and bones. The product’s identity is different from a collagen powder or a collagen-containing injectable. [1][2]

Biostimulation describes the claimed tissue response

The manufacturer describes the product as stimulating collagen, elastin and other structural proteins. Filler describes the injectable device category, while biostimulation describes a tissue response. These labels therefore are not mutually exclusive; neither establishes suitability for every person or body area. [3]

Approval depends on the product and treatment site

Radiesse and Radiesse (+) have product- and site-specific indications. Ask the qualified treating clinician which formulation and use are planned and whether that use is within the relevant approval. A broad collagen-building claim is not approval for all injection locations. [3][1]

Injection has potentially serious complications

The label warns that injection into a blood vessel can cause tissue injury, blindness or stroke. Severe allergies and bleeding disorders are among important contraindications. Treatment requires an appropriately trained health professional; do not attempt self-injection. [1]

Use the consultation to clarify the proposed result

Imagine a clinic offers a collagen-stimulating treatment. Ask for the device name, material, intended site, expected course and complication plan. This makes the proposal more concrete than comparing it with an oral collagen supplement. [1][3]
