How long does selenium stay in the body? There is no single clearance clock

Selenium is absorbed, metabolized, incorporated into body proteins and excreted. A blood measurement, a tissue store and recovery from excessive intake do not follow one interchangeable timetable.

Absorption is only the beginning

ODS explains that absorbed selenium forms enter metabolism and support synthesis of selenoproteins. Skeletal muscle contains a substantial share of total body selenium. Normal regulation relies mainly on urinary excretion, with additional routes at higher intakes. This is more complex than an ingredient simply passing unchanged through the digestive tract. [1]

Tests reflect different aspects of exposure

Serum and plasma selenium are commonly used to assess status, while hair and nail content can reflect longer-term intake. Functional markers can also be affected by inflammation. A result must therefore be interpreted with its specimen, timing and clinical setting; it is not a direct countdown to complete clearance. [1]

Do not use a guessed washout after excess intake

Imagine someone stops several selenium products after noticing hair loss and nail changes. Those symptoms can occur with excessive selenium but have other causes too. Clinical assessment should review the doses and timeline; a promised number of days until all selenium is gone would be unsupported, and continued food intake remains part of normal nutrition. [1]
