Prescription medicines have different mechanisms
SSRIs, SNRIs, some tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs affect neurotransmitter activity in different ways. NHS guidance emphasizes individual response, adverse effects and follow-up. An antidepressant’s benefit does not prove that a person had a measurable simple serotonin shortage. [1]
A precursor supplement is a separate evidence question
5-HTP is produced along the pathway from tryptophan to serotonin and melatonin. MSK describes small studies with mixed results and insufficient evidence for a reliable general treatment approach. It is not serotonin itself, and more precursor does not guarantee better mood or sleep. [2]
Combining agents can cause harm
5-HTP should not be added to serotonergic medicines or other serotonin-affecting supplements without clinical supervision. St John’s wort and SAM-e also require review. Fever, agitation, confusion and poor coordination after such a combination can indicate serious toxicity. [2]
Review treatment rather than abruptly switching
Imagine an SSRI has not helped after a short time and a serotonin supplement is proposed instead. Discuss timing, response and side effects with the prescriber. NHS advises a planned gradual reduction when stopping antidepressants, rather than abrupt discontinuation to make room for a supplement. [1]
| Claim or situation | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Antidepressant class | Different mechanism and indication |
| 5-HTP | Precursor with limited clinical evidence |
| Combining products | Can increase toxicity risk |
| Stopping a medicine | Use a prescriber-guided plan |
