Can you take tart cherry and melatonin together?

There is not enough direct evidence in the reviewed sources to establish extra benefit or a universal safe schedule for combining tart cherry with melatonin. Tart-cherry food studies do not automatically test a supplement combination. Check whether the cherry product already contains added melatonin and review the complete regimen.

Food research does not prove combination benefit

A 2025 tart-cherry review found limited, heterogeneous sleep evidence. It does not establish that adding a melatonin tablet improves the outcome or define the best timing for the pair. Naturally occurring food melatonin also varies and is not a known tablet-equivalent dose. [1][2]

Read both ingredient lists

Some products are plain juice or concentrate; others are sleep blends with herbs or added hormones. Combining them can unintentionally duplicate melatonin or other sedating ingredients. Use the actual serving directions rather than treating all cherry products as interchangeable foods. [3][4]

Personal safety matters more than a generic bedtime rule

NHS notes that safety information for many supplements taken with melatonin is incomplete. Other medicines, next-day alertness and the reason for use belong in the review. Do not assume that spacing the products by a short interval eliminates uncertainty. [4][5]

Change one part of the plan at a time

Imagine someone starts cherry concentrate and melatonin together, then feels groggy the next morning. It is difficult to identify which change contributed. Discuss a focused sleep plan and avoid driving while impaired rather than adding further products because sleep is still unsatisfactory. [5][6]
