Look beyond a single nutrient explanation
NIDCD links tinnitus with hearing loss, noise exposure, some medicines, earwax or infection, and several other conditions. Anemia is among the associated chronic conditions, but association does not identify the cause in a particular person. An ear and hearing assessment is often more informative than a supplement search. [1]
Treating deficiency and treating tinnitus are different claims
Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia and neurological problems and should be addressed when present. That does not mean all tinnitus is B12-related or that taking extra B12 will resolve it. NIDCD states that advertised vitamin and supplement cures have not been proven effective. [2][1]
Bring the timing and sound pattern to the appointment
Describe when the sound started, any noise exposure, medicines and hearing changes, including whether it pulses. NIDCD explains that pulsating tinnitus can prompt investigation for structural or vascular causes. Imagine a supplement has not helped: the next step is assessment of the sound and hearing, not assuming the dose was too low. [1]
| Observation | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Tinnitus with hearing change | Needs ear/hearing assessment |
| Confirmed B12 deficiency | Treat the deficiency |
| A marketed vitamin cure | Not established by the symptom |
