Vitamin B12 for arthritis: nerve symptoms and joint disease need different care

B12 replacement can address a genuine deficiency, including related nerve symptoms. That does not establish B12 as a treatment for osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, or mean that every painful joint reflects a vitamin problem.

Clarify what kind of pain is present

B12 deficiency can cause numbness, tingling and other neurological changes. Arthritis involves joint symptoms that may include pain, swelling or stiffness. Similar descriptions of discomfort do not establish the same diagnosis, and conditions can coexist. [1][2]

Osteoarthritis needs its own plan

NHS osteoarthritis guidance emphasizes exercise and other measures tailored to symptoms, with additional treatment when needed. The inspected guidance does not establish B12 as a cartilage-restoring therapy or a substitute for that plan. [3]

Rheumatoid arthritis is a different disease again

Rheumatoid arthritis care includes disease-modifying medicines to reduce activity and limit damage. Correcting B12 deficiency does not replace that purpose. Do not stop prescribed arthritis treatment because a vitamin is promoted for pain or inflammation. [4][1]

Treat deficiency when it is actually identified

Review dietary and absorption risks, medicines and compatible symptoms when B12 deficiency is suspected. The appropriate replacement route and follow-up depend on the cause. A joint-pain complaint alone cannot determine a B12 dose or show that extra intake will help. [1]

Recognize an urgent joint problem

A hot swollen joint with fever or feeling unwell needs prompt assessment. Imagine tingling improves after B12 treatment but a swollen knee remains: the remaining joint problem needs separate evaluation rather than another vitamin increase. [2][1]
