Use the age-based nutritional reference
ODS lists the same B6 recommended intake for boys and girls through age 13. At ages 14–18, it lists 1.3 mg daily for males and 1.2 mg for females; pregnancy and lactation have separate requirements. These are nutritional reference amounts, not proven ADHD treatment doses. [1]
Food contributes to the total
B6 occurs in foods including fish, poultry, potatoes, chickpeas and fortified foods. The full dietary intake matters. A supplement does not need to supply the entire daily requirement on top of an already adequate diet simply because the child has ADHD. [1]
Do not substitute a high-dose formula for ADHD care
NCCIH describes limited or uncertain evidence for complementary supplements in ADHD. The ordinary role of B6 in the body does not establish that a high-dose B6 product improves the child’s ADHD symptoms. Discuss a suspected deficiency or restricted diet with the pediatric clinician. [2][1]
More B6 can cause harm
ODS warns that excessive supplemental B6 can cause sensory neuropathy. Include all multivitamins, B-complex products and combination powders when reviewing exposure. Adult high-dose products and adult upper limits are not suitable default targets for a child. [1]
Compare the purpose before the number
Imagine a seven-year-old eats B6-containing foods and also takes a multivitamin. The 0.6 mg age-based recommendation refers to total daily intake, not an extra mandatory pill dose. Review the current diet and label before adding another product. [1]
| Question | Useful distinction |
|---|---|
| Ages 1–3 | 0.5 mg daily total |
| Ages 4–8 | 0.6 mg daily total |
| Ages 9–13 | 1.0 mg daily total |
