Excess is different from an ordinary dose
NHS notes that low daily doses are usually well tolerated, while too much vitamin D can cause calcium to build up. Its overdose advice includes constipation among possible symptoms. A new bowel change cannot establish the cause on its own. [1][2]
Look beyond a single symptom
Thirst, more frequent urination, vomiting, weakness or confusion alongside excess intake warrant prompt medical advice. NHS also identifies an irregular heartbeat or bone and joint pain as possible high-calcium symptoms. Do not attempt to solve this pattern simply by adding a laxative. [2][3]
Count every source and preserve the schedule
Review vitamin D in multivitamins, calcium products, drops and prescriptions. ODS sets the usual adult upper limit at 100 micrograms, or 4,000 IU, daily, while supervised treatment can differ. The limit is not a target or a diagnostic toxicity threshold. A weekly prescription must not be mistaken for a daily one. [4][2]
Take the packaging to the review
Imagine constipation begins after adding drops to a prescribed course. Note the concentration per drop, drops taken and other products, then contact the prescriber or pharmacist. If too much may have been taken or concerning symptoms are present, seek prompt medical or poison-service advice rather than guessing the absorbed dose. [2][3]
| Question | What determines the answer |
|---|---|
| Constipation alone | Cause remains uncertain |
| Possible excess plus systemic symptoms | Prompt assessment |
| Several vitamin D products | Reconcile total amount and schedule |
