The systematic evidence is inconclusive
A 2021 systematic review included eight supplementation studies and ten studies of blood zinc and thyroid hormones. It found heterogeneous results that could not establish a general supplementation effect. Associations between low zinc and thyroid disease do not settle which is cause, consequence or a shared nutritional problem. [1]
Some selected populations may respond
A 2026 narrative review describes favorable thyroid-related biochemical findings in selected groups, including people with zinc deficiency or receiving thyroid replacement. These signals merit attention, but do not establish that everyone with hypothyroidism should take zinc or that a laboratory change guarantees symptom benefit. [2]
Do not replace thyroid hormone treatment
NIDDK explains that hypothyroidism is generally treated by replacing insufficient thyroid hormone with levothyroxine and adjusting treatment using follow-up tests. Never stop the prescribed medicine to try a zinc product. Symptoms such as fatigue or hair changes are not sufficient to diagnose either condition alone. [3]
No single thyroid-specific zinc dose is established
The reviewed evidence does not provide a universal dose. NIH nutritional requirements and upper limits are not thyroid prescriptions. Review the complete supplement and medication list, since combination products can contain other minerals or ingredients relevant to treatment. Long-term high zinc can impair copper absorption. [4][1]
Measure the outcome you are treating
Imagine a low zinc level is corrected but fatigue remains. That does not justify continuing to increase zinc. The clinician may need to reassess thyroid control, the medicine routine and other causes while following the nutritional issue separately. [3][4]
| Finding | Relevant follow-up |
|---|---|
| Confirmed inadequate zinc | Individual nutritional plan |
| Hypothyroidism | Thyroid replacement and monitoring |
| Laboratory change in a study | Not necessarily symptom improvement |
| Persistent fatigue | Reassess causes rather than escalating zinc |
