The study and its comparison

Researchers assigned 156 people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes or prediabetes to metformin alone or metformin plus Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12. Gastrointestinal symptoms were tracked early and metabolic measurements at three months. [1]

The combination group had higher treatment adherence, fewer reported gastrointestinal symptoms and a greater HbA1c reduction. The findings did not establish comparable improvements in weight or blood lipids. [1]

What the finding establishes

The comparator did not include matching probiotic placebo, and improved adherence could contribute to glucose differences. The preparation-specific result is not proof for every probiotic. Funding and conflicts were not established from the abstract. Medication changes belong with the prescriber. [1]

A hypothetical distinction

Imagine better tolerance leads people to take more of their prescribed medicine. A glucose change cannot automatically be assigned to a separate direct probiotic effect.
