Does berberine kill parasites?

Berberine has antimicrobial research behind it, but that does not establish a reliable parasite cleanse or a universal dose for human infections. Parasites include different organisms requiring different assessment and treatment. Do not treat persistent diarrhea or suspected worms by assuming a broad supplement claim identifies the cause.

Antimicrobial is broader than an effective parasite treatment

MSK describes experimental antimicrobial effects and selected clinical gastrointestinal research. Those findings do not establish eradication of every protozoan or worm infection. Activity against a bacterium or improvement in diarrhea cannot be transferred to a different parasite. [1]

Giardia and worms are different problems

CDC advises individualized treatment assessment for Giardia; some asymptomatic infections may not need medicine, while symptoms and household circumstances can change the decision. NHS guidance describes targeted medicines and hygiene measures for worm infections. Neither approach is a generic cleanse. [2][3]

Symptoms alone do not identify the organism

Persistent diarrhea, abdominal symptoms or unexplained weight loss warrant assessment, especially after relevant travel or exposure. Maintain hydration with diarrhea and obtain prompt advice for infants or vulnerable people. Berberine should not be given to infants and may be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. [2][3][4]

Do not call worsening symptoms die-off

Imagine diarrhea worsens during a berberine cleanse. Diarrhea is itself a known adverse effect and does not prove parasites are dying. Stop relying on the cleanse theory and obtain advice about the symptoms, exposure history and appropriate testing or treatment. [4][2]
