Does black cherry juice contain melatonin for sleep?

A product called black cherry juice should not automatically inherit findings from Montmorency tart-cherry studies. Cherries can contain melatonin, but the species, variety and preparation matter. The bottle’s color or marketing name does not establish its hormone content or prove that it improves sleep.

Start with the actual fruit and formulation

Check whether the ingredient list identifies tart cherry, a sweet-cherry variety, a juice blend or added melatonin. Food-composition studies show differences between cherry cultivars and preparations. The phrase black cherry alone is not a standardized experimental ingredient. [1][2]

Tart-cherry evidence is limited and specific

The 2025 systematic review included seven interventions, with some improvements in sleep measures but heterogeneous results and products. It does not validate every black-cherry beverage or establish that darker juice contains more melatonin. [3]

An added hormone changes the comparison

A beverage with separately added melatonin is different from naturally occurring trace amounts in fruit. Review its Supplement Facts or other dosing information and the complete formula. General food evidence cannot establish the safety of a fortified sleep product. [4][2]

Use a food-sized expectation

Imagine someone buys black cherry juice because a study used a particular tart-cherry concentrate. Without matching the preparation, the expected benefit is uncertain. Enjoy a suitable serving as food if desired, but do not replace persistent-insomnia assessment with a color-based sleep claim. [3][4]
