Carlson fish oil: compare EPA and DHA, testing scope and serving cost

Carlson describes testing and IFOS certification for selected omega-3 products. For a useful comparison, match the exact liquid or softgel formula and its EPA/DHA content rather than relying on the brand or flavor alone.

The inspected softgel is not the liquid formula

The Very Finest Fish Oil softgel page lists 700 mg total omega-3s per serving and specifies 360 mg EPA plus 240 mg DHA, or 600 mg combined. Directions are two softgels with a meal. Do not substitute figures from Carlson’s liquid product or another strength. [1]

Testing claims require product and lot context

Carlson reports testing for freshness, potency and purity and IFOS certification on more than 30 omega-3 products. This review inspected those manufacturer statements but did not retrieve a current independent result for a bottle in hand. Check the relevant certification report and lot when purchasing. [2]

Taste awards answer a different question

The manufacturer describes taste awards for its liquid fish oils. A flavor preference can affect willingness to use a product, but an award does not establish a clinical benefit or guarantee freshness of a bottle stored incorrectly. Follow that product’s storage directions. [2][3]

Compare cost for the intended EPA/DHA serving

Imagine one product lists total fish-oil mass and another lists EPA plus DHA. Use the actual EPA/DHA amounts and number of servings to compare value. Discuss the intended dose with a clinician when using fish oil for a medical purpose rather than choosing by maximum strength. [4][1]
