Compare fish oil by the EPA and DHA it supplies, then examine formulation, quality evidence and suitability. The largest oil-weight number is not the most informative one.

Count the fatty acids rather than total oil alone

ODS notes that omega-3 supplement amounts vary widely. Fish-oil weight includes more than EPA and DHA, so compare their listed amounts per serving and the number of capsules in that serving. Choose an intended use before deciding how much is relevant. [1]

Use quality evidence for its actual purpose

An independent certification can provide assurance about label contents and unacceptable contaminant levels within its scope. It does not establish a benefit for a particular illness. Likewise, a manufacturing or absorption claim cannot substitute for evidence matching the intended clinical outcome. [2][1]

An independently listed fish oil example

A directory check on September 25, 2026 found Thorne Super EPA (EPA & DHA) in NSF Certified for Sport: 90-gelcap package, one-gelcap serving; specific certified lots are listed. This is an independently listed quality-check example, not a clinical winner. It does not certify another brand, a different pack or flavor, or an Amazon seller. Recheck the exact entry and your lot before purchase. [3][4]

Compare equivalent servings

Imagine bottle A supplies 300 mg EPA plus DHA in a capsule and bottle B supplies 600 mg. Two A capsules match one B capsule for that combined amount, but the EPA:DHA proportions and other details may differ. Review medicines and medical needs before turning a comparison into a high-dose plan; prescription omega-3 medicines are a separate category. [1]
