DHEA: a hormone precursor, not a routine anti-aging supplement

Changes in hormone levels do not establish better strength, memory or long-term health.

What the research addresses

DHEA is a hormone made by the adrenal glands and a precursor of estrogens and androgens. MSK describes condition-specific research and mixed findings. Studies have not established a general anti-aging benefit or consistent improvement in muscle performance and cognition. [1]

What the finding does not establish

A lower hormone concentration with age is an observation, not proof that raising it improves health. Oral supplementation and locally administered hormonal treatments also need to be assessed as different interventions. [1]

A reference-range number is not a treatment target by itself

Imagine a healthy person sees that a hormone level is lower than a younger adult's and assumes restoring the younger value will improve memory. That conclusion requires evidence linking supplementation to better memory and acceptable harms, not just evidence that the blood level can be raised.

The comparison should also match the person. A study in a specific diagnosed condition cannot establish the value of routine supplementation in everyone of the same age. Ask which symptoms and outcomes improved, how they were measured and whether the proposed route and preparation match the research.

Hypothetical example — illustrates evidence interpretation; not a product or dose recommendation.
Hypothetical finding or choiceWhat it means
A level declines with ageAn observation, not an automatic deficiency diagnosis
A supplement raises the levelNot proof of improved memory or strength
A treatment works in one conditionNot a universal anti-aging result

Safety and treatment considerations

DHEA can cause acne, and mania has been reported with high-dose use. MSK warns against combining it with tamoxifen and describes concerns in hormone-sensitive cancers. Do not self-treat a laboratory number or alter hormonal treatment without the prescribing clinician. [1]

A practical next step

This guide does not recommend a DHEA dose or product. A useful conversation starts with the reason for testing, symptoms, current medicines and the clinical question, rather than the promise of returning a hormone number to youth.
