What the evidence addresses
Dong quai is the root of Angelica sinensis, often included in traditional herbal formulas. It is marketed for menstrual and menopausal symptoms. MSK finds the evidence for menopausal symptom relief inconclusive; a history of use does not resolve that uncertainty. [1]
Where the conclusion stops
Results from a multi-herb formula cannot be assigned to dong quai alone. Laboratory estrogen-related activity also does not demonstrate a predictable or beneficial hormone effect in people. [1]
Ask whether the formula matches the question
Suppose a menopause blend has five ingredients and cites a study of another five-ingredient blend. Count how many components actually match, then compare their amounts and preparations. Even a complete match would support a conclusion about the blend, not an automatic claim that dong quai produced the result.
The outcome matters just as much. A study might ask about hot-flash frequency while an advertisement promises “hormonal balance.” The second phrase is broader and harder to evaluate. Keeping a specific goal in view helps prevent a narrow result from expanding into a much larger promise.
| Hypothetical statement | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| A formula helped participants | Which complete formula was tested? |
| Supports hormonal balance | Which measurable symptom or outcome changed? |
| Contains dong quai | Does the evidence concern this preparation and amount? |
Safety and treatment considerations
MSK advises avoiding dong quai during pregnancy and breastfeeding and consulting a physician with hormone-sensitive cancer. Reported effects include digestive symptoms and photosensitivity. Blood-thinning medicines and other prescriptions need an interaction check; the strength and clinical relevance of interaction evidence vary. [1]
A useful next step
A useful care discussion includes the symptom you want to address, current medicines and the full proposed formula. This overview does not identify a best dong quai product or establish a substitute for prescribed care.
