Do elastin supplements work for skin?

A small randomized trial of one fish-derived elastin peptide reported improved skin measurements after 12 weeks. That is preliminary, product-specific evidence, not proof that all elastin supplements reverse skin aging or rebuild elastic fibers.

What the trial tested

The 2024 double-blind trial randomized 100 Korean adults aged 35–60 with visible crow’s feet and relatively dry skin. It compared 100 mg daily of a branded bonito-derived elastin peptide with a matched placebo for 12 weeks. The authors reported benefits in wrinkle measurements, hydration and melanin index. [1]

Why confidence remains limited

This was one defined formulation, population and short observation period. Cosmetic instrument changes do not establish treatment of skin disease or lasting effects after stopping. The authors declared no conflicts, but the acknowledgments identify product preparation by a company with an author affiliation; separate financial funding was not clearly specified in the inspected text. [1]

Safety cannot be generalized indefinitely

No product-related adverse events were reported in the trial, but its selected participants and duration cannot exclude rare reactions or long-term risks. Fish-derived material matters for allergy assessment. Neither a small dose nor an animal-source protein guarantees suitability for everyone. [1][2]

Compare the actual formulation

Imagine a supplement cites this trial while using a different elastin source or a mixed beauty blend. The trial does not establish equivalence. Compare the form and dose, and treat the observed results as preliminary rather than a promise of regenerated skin. [1]
