A serving may contain several pills
Labels can define a serving as one, two or more softgels. If EPA and DHA are listed per serving, divide by the capsule count only when the capsules are identical. Do not assume that the number printed next to fish oil represents one pill or all of the omega-3 content. [1][2]
A target needs a reason
Nutritional intake, prescription treatment and a self-selected wellness product are not interchangeable contexts. The appropriate amount depends on the purpose and evidence, not how many pills fit comfortably in a routine. Check other omega-3 products and any cod liver oil that adds vitamins as well. [2]
Translate a hypothetical plan
Imagine a clinician-specified plan calls for 600 mg combined EPA and DHA and the product supplies 300 mg per identical capsule. Two capsules supply that arithmetic amount. This example is not a recommended target, and a prescription product cannot automatically be replaced with an over-the-counter calculation. [2]
| Illustration | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 300 mg EPA/DHA per capsule | Hypothetical concentration |
| Two identical capsules | 600 mg combined |
| Total fish-oil headline | Not the same calculation |
