FORTIBONE collagen: bone-density evidence and its limits

FORTIBONE is a branded collagen peptide ingredient studied for bone outcomes. Bone mineral density is meaningful, but it is not the same endpoint as fewer fractures.

What the name identifies

GELITA markets FORTIBONE for bone health. The ingredient is a specific hydrolyzed collagen peptide preparation, rather than calcium or an osteoporosis medicine. Research about this preparation does not automatically describe every collagen powder. [1][2]

What a controlled trial tested

A 2018 double-blind trial enrolled 131 postmenopausal women with age-related low bone density; 102 completed it, with all enrolled participants included in the intention-to-treat analysis. The comparison was 5 g daily versus maltodextrin placebo for 12 months. Spine and femoral-neck bone density favored the peptide group. The study was partly funded by GELITA; its authors declared no conflicts. Attrition and the specific population matter when applying the findings. [2]

Do not substitute a marker for a clinical endpoint

Imagine a label uses that trial to imply that a powder prevents fractures. The trial measured bone density and turnover markers, not a demonstrated reduction in fractures. Someone being treated for osteoporosis should discuss supplements within their existing care plan rather than replace prescribed treatment on the strength of this result. [2][3]
