Which fruits contain melatonin? Why a universal ranking misleads

Melatonin has been reported in fruits including cherries, grapes and strawberries, but a fixed highest-to-lowest list is not reliable across products. Cultivar, ripeness, processing and measurement basis vary. Fruit is a useful food category; measured trace melatonin does not establish a dose for treating insomnia.

Several fruits have been studied

The dietary-source review reports melatonin measurements in cherry, grape and strawberry samples, with differences even among varieties of the same fruit. It also distinguishes fruit flesh, skins, fresh weight and dry weight. These are not interchangeable servings. [1]

A table maximum is not a shopping ranking

A high value for dried grape skin cannot be directly compared with fresh cherries by weight and then applied to a bowl of fruit. Laboratory methods and nondetectable findings further complicate the comparison. A useful ranking would require comparable assays and prepared serving sizes. [1][2]

Sleep outcomes remain a separate question

Tart-cherry interventions have shown some favorable findings, but a recent review calls the evidence limited and heterogeneous. That does not establish that whichever fruit has the highest measured concentration produces the greatest sleep benefit. [3]

Choose variety instead of chasing a hormone target

Imagine a fruit chart encourages very large servings to replace a melatonin tablet. That conversion is not supported without a valid product-specific measurement and clinical evidence. Select fruit for nutrition and preference, and manage persistent sleep problems through an appropriate sleep plan. [4][5]

Hypothetical example — compare fruit measurements correctly
VariableWhy it changes the answer
CultivarDifferent measured composition
Skin versus whole fruitDifferent edible sample
Fresh versus dry weightDifferent concentration basis
Assay and servingNeeded for a fair comparison
