Is magnesium good for acne? Combination studies do not establish a standalone treatment

Magnesium-related skin research is preliminary and does not establish a reliable standalone acne treatment. A supplement containing magnesium plus fatty acids cannot show which ingredient contributed to a result. Use evidence-based acne care and assess any nutritional need separately.

There is research, but the formulation matters

The oral-nutraceutical systematic review includes a magnesium phosphate and fatty-acid combination among the studied interventions. It classified that evidence as poor quality. This is not proof that magnesium alone treats acne or that an arbitrary magnesium capsule reproduces the combination. [1]

Biological plausibility is not a clear-skin guarantee

A recent dermatology review discusses potential magnesium benefits while calling for better human trials and standardized formulations. Roles in inflammation and skin biology do not establish a best salt, dose or treatment duration for acne. [2]

Consider the strength of the overall evidence

The nutraceutical review found that many studies were small and that stronger trials were needed. Some authors disclosed pharmaceutical consulting or other industry relationships. Its findings should be read as an appraisal of varied supplements, not an endorsement of every product containing a mineral. [1]

Acne treatment targets several mechanisms

AAD describes treatment selected for the type and severity of acne, including topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and other medicines as appropriate. A mineral supplement does not replace this assessment, particularly when acne is painful, persistent or causing scars. [3]

Avoid attributing every change to the supplement

Imagine acne improves after a new topical treatment and a magnesium blend start together. The observation cannot isolate the supplement effect. Also review magnesium with the medicine list, because it can reduce absorption of some antibiotics used in clinical care. [3][4]
