The product category is broader than a nutrient name
Vitamin C, vitamin D and the B vitamins are different nutrients from magnesium. A combination tablet can include magnesium alongside vitamins, but magnesium is not hidden inside a vitamin molecule as its nutritional equivalent. Look for a separate magnesium entry on the Supplement Facts panel. [1][2]
Read elemental magnesium per actual serving
ODS explains that the supplement panel declares elemental magnesium, rather than the full weight of its compound. The parenthetical form, such as magnesium citrate, identifies the source. A large compound amount on promotional copy is not necessarily the declared magnesium amount. Serving size can also span more than one tablet. [1]
A hypothetical multivitamin label
Suppose two tablets provide 80 mg magnesium. One tablet contributes 40 mg; adding a separate 100 mg magnesium product makes 140 mg from those supplements. This arithmetic establishes exposure, not whether supplementation is needed. Food, medicines, kidney function and the reason for use remain separate considerations. [1]
| Hypothetical use | Magnesium |
|---|---|
| One of two tablets in an 80 mg serving | 40 mg |
| That tablet plus100 mg separately | 140 mg |
