Magnesium lotion and gel: skin care is different from magnesium replacement

Magnesium lotions and gels are external-use formulations marketed for muscle comfort, sleep or skin care. A moisturizing or massage effect does not establish that enough magnesium crossed the skin to correct a deficiency or treat a health condition.

Look at the entire formulation

The inspected BetterYou body lotion includes magnesium chloride, glycerin, shea butter and other formulation ingredients. That is one lotion, not a recipe for every gel. Product texture and moisturizing ingredients can influence the experience independently of any systemic magnesium effect. [1]

What does the absorption evidence establish?

A 2017 narrative review found insufficient support for promoting transdermal magnesium as an established alternative to oral replacement. It discussed small, limited studies. This is older evidence, not a new exhaustive review, and does not prove that absolutely no magnesium can cross skin. It does mean that an application amount should not be assumed to equal a delivered nutritional dose. [2]

Match the claimed benefit to the route

Normal magnesium functions and oral supplementation findings do not automatically establish that a lotion or gel improves sleep, relieves a particular pain disorder or corrects low magnesium. A pleasant skin-care routine may be useful for comfort without proving those separate medical claims. [3][2]

Skin reactions are a reason to reassess

Follow the specific external-use directions. The inspected lotion warns against eye contact and use on broken skin. Tingling does not diagnose a deficiency or demonstrate effective absorption. Avoid a product that triggers dermatitis and seek advice if the reaction persists; do not intensify application to overcome irritation. [1][4]

Do not substitute a texture change for a treatment plan

Imagine someone with a confirmed deficiency switches from a prescribed replacement to a gel because it avoids swallowing pills. The gel’s concentration does not establish equivalent delivery. Discuss a tolerable replacement plan and the cause of the low level with the treating clinician. [3][2]
