Magnesium with statins: the rosuvastatin antacid instruction is specific

Some magnesium-containing products require specific timing with a statin. MedlinePlus instructs people taking rosuvastatin to take aluminum and magnesium hydroxide antacids at least two hours afterward. That instruction should not be converted into a universal rule for all statins or every magnesium supplement.

Identify the statin and the magnesium product

Rosuvastatin, another statin, a nutritional magnesium capsule and a combination antacid are different products. A pharmacist needs both names and the active ingredients to determine the relevant directions. The word magnesium alone does not define the interaction. [1][2]

The rosuvastatin direction has a defined order

MedlinePlus says aluminum and magnesium hydroxide antacids should be taken at least two hours after rosuvastatin. The direction is not merely to separate them by any two-hour interval in either order. Follow the actual prescription and product instructions. [1]

Do not generalize one antacid instruction to every salt

This source does not establish an identical timing rule for glycinate, citrate, every nutritional dose or every statin. Other medicines in the regimen may have their own mineral interactions. An exact-product review is more reliable than a universal supplement schedule. [1][2]

Magnesium does not replace the statin decision

Nutritional magnesium use and cholesterol treatment are separate questions. Do not stop a prescribed statin because a supplement claims heart benefits. Muscle pain or weakness, especially with dark urine or other concerning symptoms, should be assessed rather than automatically treated as magnesium deficiency. [1]

Build a schedule from verified directions

Imagine a person takes rosuvastatin at night and occasionally uses an aluminum/magnesium hydroxide antacid. The relevant instruction concerns that antacid and the order of administration. Adding an unrelated two-hour rule to every other supplement may still miss a different medicine interaction. [1][2]
