What the CBC actually measures
MedlinePlus lists red and white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume among CBC measurements. A differential adds information about white-cell types. Magnesium is not one of those listed measurements. Having blood drawn does not mean every possible blood test was performed. [1]
How magnesium testing is identified
A magnesium result may be labeled Mg, Mag or Magnesium-Serum. Discuss the reason for testing with the clinician; symptoms, medicines and kidney or gastrointestinal conditions can inform that decision. The blood measurement concerns circulating magnesium and is not a direct inventory of all magnesium in body tissues. [2]
A hypothetical report review
Imagine a report contains hemoglobin, platelets and white-cell counts but no magnesium entry. It supports interpretation of the tests shown; it does not establish a normal magnesium value. Check the ordered-test list or ask the clinician whether magnesium was included. Follow any preparation instructions for the complete set of tests, since a concurrent test may require fasting. [1][2]
| Hypothetical report field | What it concerns |
|---|---|
| Hemoglobin | A CBC-related blood measurement |
| Magnesium-Serum | Separate magnesium measurement |
