Does melatonin cause dry eyes or help them?

Melatonin is not an established treatment for dry eye, and the reviewed guidance does not identify dry eye as a common melatonin side effect. Neither statement rules out an individual reaction. Experimental eye research should not be interpreted as proof that an oral sleep supplement will improve tear production.

Investigational eye formulations are different from sleep tablets

A 2024 review discusses melatonin in ocular tissues and the possibility of topical formulations for several eye conditions. Its proposed antioxidant and delivery mechanisms do not establish routine effectiveness of oral melatonin for dry eye. Do not put an oral supplement into the eye. [1]

Check other likely contributors

NHS lists reduced tear production or rapid evaporation, contact lenses, prolonged screen use, dry environments, certain medicines and conditions such as Sjögren’s syndrome among relevant causes. A symptom beginning after melatonin deserves review, but timing alone does not identify the cause. [2]

Common-side-effect lists are not exhaustive

The NHS melatonin page lists dry mouth and skin symptoms, which are not the same as dry eye. It advises prompt help for changes in vision. A missing symptom on a short list is not proof that it can never occur. [3]

Choose eye-specific care

Imagine someone develops gritty eyes after starting a sleep product while working longer hours at a screen. Review both changes, take screen breaks and ask an optometrist or pharmacist about suitable eye treatment. Painful red eyes or new visual changes need urgent assessment rather than a higher melatonin dose. [2][3]
