Does melatonin make you hungry or suppress appetite?

Melatonin does not have a reliably established appetite-increasing or appetite-suppressing effect in humans. It is involved in circadian and metabolic signaling, but most experimental appetite evidence is preclinical. Do not use it as a weight-loss or appetite treatment, or assume a change in hunger proves a particular hormone effect.

The human evidence is limited

A systematic review identified 15 relevant trials, but only two were clinical studies; the other 13 involved animals. Outcomes included food intake and appetite-related hormones. The authors found heterogeneous results and could not draw a robust conclusion for clinical practice. [1]

Appetite markers are not the same as eating behavior

Changes in leptin or ghrelin do not automatically mean someone feels less hungry or eats fewer calories. The review notes that metabolic effects may occur independently of food intake. Findings from rodents or dogs cannot define a human appetite-control dose. [1]

A sleep product can have other ingredients

A gummy or drink may contain sugars, flavorings or additional active ingredients. Check the whole preparation and the timing of meals and sleep rather than assigning every change in hunger to melatonin alone. Its established sleep-related role is distinct from an appetite-treatment claim. [2][3]

Investigate persistent changes

Imagine a person notices evening hunger after starting melatonin while also changing sleep and eating times. Several factors changed together. Record the pattern and seek advice for a persistent or concerning appetite change rather than increasing or stopping prescribed treatment on a mechanistic assumption. [1][3]
