The study and its comparison
Eight healthy men entered a blinded crossover study comparing daily melatonin with placebo over a six-month treatment study. Researchers measured semen characteristics and reproductive hormones at intervals. [1]
Six men showed no change in the reported semen or hormone measures. Two had lower sperm concentration and motility during melatonin treatment, alongside estradiol changes. Later follow-up showed recovery in one and persistent abnormalities in the other. [1]
What the finding establishes
Eight participants cannot establish how often this occurs or prove the proposed mechanism. The reported testosterone-to-estradiol ratio is not simply a fall in testosterone. Funding and conflicts were not established from the abstract. The study did not measure testicular shrinkage or demonstrate effects in every user. [1]
A hypothetical distinction
Imagine a hormone ratio rises because its denominator falls. That does not necessarily mean the numerator increased or decreased.
